Big brake kits have a reputation, and it isn't a good one: complex installs, custom brackets, permanent modifications, and a price that reflects all three. This project was an attempt to prove that reputation isn't inevitable.
The Challenge
Big brake kits for the C4 platform typically mean complex installs and high costs. We set out to build a genuinely bolt-on big brake kit that keeps cost down without cutting corners on performance.
The Process
Using the OEM rotor mount as a reference point, we designed a custom spacer and adapter system that lets Wilwood 4-piston hydraulic calipers and a larger 13-inch vented rotor bolt straight onto the factory hub — no custom brackets, no permanent modifications.
Anchoring to the OEM mount is the decision the whole design rests on. It means the car can be returned to stock, the install doesn't require a fabricator, and the tolerances are referenced to a surface that was manufactured to a known spec rather than to something worn or previously modified.
A Wilwood mechanical parking brake completes the system. The next development phase adapts the factory parking brake cables directly to the Wilwood mechanical caliper, cutting cost even further.
The Result
A big-brake upgrade for the C4 platform that installs like a bolt-on system, with further development already underway to make it simpler and less expensive still. 3D scan, design and test fit took 5 days.
