Custom Header, Y-Pipe & Catback Exhaust — Lexus GX470

When a fabrication shop needs an exhaust system that doesn't exist yet, the hard part isn't the welding — it's knowing exactly where every inch of tube can go before the first cut. That's the problem this project solved.

The Challenge

Brockett Built needed a complete custom exhaust system for a Lexus GX470 — headers, y-pipe, and catback — designed from scratch rather than adapted from an off-the-shelf kit. The GX470 has effectively no aftermarket support at this level, so there was no existing part to modify and no template to work from. Everything had to be engineered around the actual vehicle.

The Process

I started with a full 3D scan of the engine bay and exhaust manifolds, capturing exact clearances and routing paths as they really are rather than as a factory drawing says they should be. On a vehicle with this many heat-sensitive components packed around the exhaust path, the difference between those two things is what separates a system that fits from one that has to be cut apart and re-welded on the lift.

From that scan data I modeled the complete system in CAD — from the header flanges all the way back to mate up with Brockett Built's proven cat-back exhaust. Every junction, every clearance, and every hanger location was resolved in CAD before any material was ordered.

Campsite Precision handled the full design. Brockett Built brought it to life with the premium fabrication they're known for. That split is the point: a fabricator's time is worth more spent building than spent problem-solving geometry.

The Result

A complete exhaust system engineered around this specific vehicle, not forced onto it. Fitment was resolved in CAD rather than discovered on the lift, which is what keeps a custom exhaust project from turning into a cycle of cutting, checking, and re-cutting.

Project Snapshot

  • Client: Brockett Built
  • Platform: Lexus GX470
  • Services: 3D scanning, reverse engineering, CAD design
  • Scope: Custom headers, y-pipe, and catback exhaust
  • Turnaround: 3D scan to complete initial design in 7 days
  • Fabrication by: Brockett Built

"Their 3D scanning and reverse engineering mean fitment is dead-on the first time instead of me cutting, checking, and re-cutting. Campsite Precision lets a small shop punch way above its weight — the design side is handled and handled right, so I can focus on building."
